Ah, tongue in cheek? Not any longer. I don’t think that 2016 was an aberration. It was an unveiling of the GOP’s true motives and designs.
I actually think a constitutional convention could work. Just as the founders decided not to tinker with the Articles of Confederation but launched into a full-fledged restructuring of government, so, too, I think that such a convention would produce at least two constitutions. One would probably do just what you suggested: “Overturn the 14th amendment, void civil rights acts of the 60s, abolish the income tax?” By the way, the Koch brothers have been working toward a constitutional convention with just such an agenda in mind.
But I think that another constitution would emerge. That one would reflect the values and institutions that I alluded to in my piece: Green New Deal, protections of our elections (what the House currently has on offer as HB 1), guarantees of individual and civil liberties, fair taxation, and the rest.
Not surprisingly, the blue states would ratify the second; the red states, the first. Then…what?
So not so much tongue in cheek.
